The Basics Of Raising A Cat

Cats have been loved by people all over the world. They’ve been around for ages and were even found sacred by some religions and cultures. Now ages later there’s thousands getting put down each week and many dieing from leukemia. A cat’s nutrition is important in preventing diseases even Leukemia and Feline Aids.

Leukemia has become a common disease in outdoor cats. There are vaccines available to prevent them from catching it but it only prevents 95% so there is still a 5% chance of contracting the disease. Domestic cats have a much lower chance of catching the disease as long as they’re not exposed to other cats that haven’t been tested for the virus. There are many symptoms of the disease so it’s hard to diagnose without a test. Most vets offer the test in their clinic. Make sure you get your cat tested and keep them healthy. Besides cats catching the disease from each other the second way is through very bad nutrition.

Most cats are fed a dry diet. Owners don’t know better and just grab the cheapest food they get their hands on from a local supermarket. Before we even own a cat as a pet we have to understand what their needs are when it comes to their diet and nutrition. Cats naturally are carnivorous animals. They have short intestines and a small stomach so their diet needs to be concentrated, highly digestible, low in residue and high in protein. Adult dog’s protein intake will decrease to a third of a puppy’s required protein consumption. A kitten needs 1 ½ the intake of an adult. An adult cat needs a high protein diet. A cat can’t receive nutrients and vitamins from most plants so it is required for them to eat meat. They eat even the organs of the animal so they absorb the digested nutrients derived from the animals. Since they are partially or wholly digested the cat can process the vitamins in its own body. They do not have a dietary requirement for carbohydrates. They do need a lot of water though. All living cells revolve around water but the cat has evolved to get most of their water through their food. The difference in moisture from dry to wet food is about a 60% difference! Cats increase their water intake voluntarily but it’s not enough to keep them hydrated.

The water intake in their diet is really important but if they have all the water in the world and their vitamins are lacking then it will do no good. They have to have a complete diet. Make sure your cat is receiving all of the vitamins and water it needs to function correctly. They will love you forever for it.

Happy Cat, or Dead Cat

Let us look at the biggest ways people are harming their cats out of good intention.

1. The great outdoors.  Most cat lovers will tell you their cat is happier outdoors, and while this is probably true, they are also at the most risk when outdoors.  The biggest risks are cars and angry neighbours.  To think like a cat, you must think like a 4 year old child.  You are innocent to the dangers around you, you just want to play, explore, and nap.  Unwatched, and without a fence, you are easily sidetracted and prone to wandering off.  What parent would allow a 4 year old child to roam around unsupervised and without a fence?  Yet many cat owners do this.  There are ways of letting a cat out and keeping it safe, the same as you would do for your child.  Such methods are building a cat enclosure or harness training the pet.  The average lifespan of a cat who goes outside is 2 years.

2.  Milk.  Cats are lactose intollerant, some more than others.  Sure, they love milk, but it hurts their digestive system, causing it to work harder, often resulting in diarrhea.  Additionally milk is high in Calcium, which is noted for causing urinary tract problems.  Milk won’t kill your cat, but it will contribute to problems that many owners find impossible to deal with (referring to the urinary problems, which some owners refuse to deal with and abandon their cat instead).  Urinary problems can be fixed, but not if you continue to offer your cat milk.  Even the milk treat sold in stores has no nutritional value.

Painting by Otto Scholderer.

3.  Tuna and Salmon.  Again, two things cats love.  Tuna is bad for them because of the high mercury content, Salmon is bad for them because of the high calcuim content in the fish bones often contained in salmon.  Too much fish oil in their stomachs makes it hard to digest and absorb vitamins and minerals correctly.  Occassional treats wont hurt, but too much of a good thing, will.

4.  Low quality food.  All pet foods say they are the best, full nutrition, and so on.  We all know, all things cannot be the best.  If your cat food contains a lot of corn or any “by-products” it is a low quality food.  Cats are carnivores, they must have a good meat source, protein from corn is not a good meat source and is difficult to digest.  As a result cats must eat more food to get any nutrition -thus making things hard on their digestive tract.  Gravy is a carbohydrate, cats should never be fed canned food that has gravy.  A lot of people, though wrong feeding habits, are increasing their cats likelyhood of developing diabetes, or other health problems.

5.  Abandoning an Unwanted Cat onto a Farm.  Believe it or not, but most farmers do not want your unwanted pet.  Most farmers will shoot cats and dogs who are dumped on their farm, that is if the resident farm dog or clan of cats doesnt drive it off first.  City cats do not adust well to farm life, its cruel and hard.  Coyotees, and racoons will kill cats.  It seems like an idealic life, but unless the farmer asked you for the cat, chances are he does not want it.  I live in the country myself, and know this as a fact.

6.  Letting your Pet Reproduce.  This not only puts the life of your pet in danger, but there is no guarantee your pet wants to be a parent.  Occasionally they will reject the litter.  The real problem here though is that millions of cats and kittens are euthanized every year in animal shelters, so even if your litter finds homes, it means somebody elses litter of kittens did not.  Addionally cats who are not spayed or neutered are at greater risks for some health problems including some cancers.  Typically spayed and neutered pets live on average 2 years longer than those who have not been “fixed”, and have fewer health problems.

Remember we all want what is best for our pets, but our cats do not know what is best for them.  Always think of your cat as a 4 year old child.  Just because they like something, does not me that it is safe, or good, for them.  You are not only their owner, you are their parent, and guardian.  Providing your pet with good food, fun toys, and a safe environment is your responsibility.

Cats care

Cats have been ignites human civilization for thousands of years. Been adored as gods (as at the time of ancient Egypt) men also fear the cat as related to the fathers relationship with magic or the devil. Animals are very responsive, good adaptability to various environments.

Cats can become good friends because they are relatively easily maintained and provide enjoyment for life.

Selecting a personality
With the increasing popularity of cats as pets show responsibility to treat them well. Responsibility to ensure that they receive the correct food, have a good place to stay and get treatment by veterinarians. Cats can live up to fifteen years. They have a personality that is different. There are happy together and there is also a socializing. They tend to be some health problems and requires little care other than routine maintenance.

Maintain nutrition
Cats are karnivora which means they need the actual animal source such as meat, chicken or fish in their food. No food vegetables are best for cats. No animal source food in them, they will lack nutrients and can endanger their lives.

Choosing a cat
At the time of choosing cat food, it is best to choose according to the age of the cat. For example a child should get the cat food kitten and adult cat get cat food adult. And also to object to the body of a cat that can take advantage of low-calorie food. It is important to choose foods that complete and balanced nutrition.

Milk can make diarrhea
There are several types of cat food are available: dry, half wet, and cans. Cat owners should be aware, and the lack of any excess over this type of discussion with the vet. New water should always be available. It is the old story that the cat should be given susu susu but otherwise it can cause diarrhea in cats.

Cats just like humans
Each cat should be evaluated routinely by veterinarians who are familiar with this species. Cats should be examined for health problems that pontensial. Cats tend to have the same problem with men. Cancer, kidney disease, heart disease and dental pain is not that unusual anymore. Problem found as early as possible, and by others, kucing akan with positive reply. As cat owners, we need to help maintain good health. Many cats are amenable to brush teeth regularly with toothpaste cat.

Be careful lice
They must also be examined for parasites often attack the cat. The most obvious to the ear is a louse (earmites) or lice (flea). Although there are not that look like some type of intestinal worms that nest in the belly of a cat and take a valuable nutrition. This problem must be treated and more effective drugs are available in the market. Dogs are allowed outside the home will likely be more clear by this parasite, or parasites may have been developed in house.

Need to be sterilized
Generally, it is recommended for cats sterilized and also called Spay / sterile for female and castrated / neuter for males. Sterilization does not only help in controlling the cat neglected children, but also reduce the risk of problems associated with the hybrid system and behavior problems associated with the type of opponent.

Cats are sexually mature female age 4 months
Is also called tabby queen (queen), they generally begin sex between adults is 4 to 12 months. That is not sterilized female / spayed children can produce up to eight years or more. Tomcat called tom, a general from 6 fertile and eight months and continue until 14 years or more. Kebanyak veterinarian to recommend a cat diseterilasi on or after six months although there is disagreement from some individuals on this issue. Cat owners who are interested akan iniharus consultation to the veterinarian at the first time a survey and vaccination.

Cat disease
There are some cat disease to get vaccinated by veterinarians. Feline rhinotracheitis, calici virus and panleukopenia (distemper) truly a disease of death for a cat. This disease is caused by a virus that is easily ditular of cat to cat. How can virus clothing brought by the owner at the time a cat a cat treat pain. The vaccine is also available for other diseases such as rabies which has become endemic in certain areas. So it’s very important even in the home for the cat vaccinated for this disease. There are several vaccines for tersedida other disease virus, feline leukemia and feline infectious peritonitis is often found on outdoor, wild cat, or a multi-cat household. But this does not mean indoor cat will not contract this disease. There is no effective treatment for this disease and must be prevented. It is important for cat owners to realize there are many diseases such as feline Immuno-deficiency virus infection and at the time a cat is exposed to this disease, there is no vaccine or cure available at this time.

Cats are very sensitive
Also important for cat owners to understand that cats are very sensitive to some drugs and products in the home. Cats do not like human memetabolisme aspirin and should only be used under veterinary supervision. Acetaminophen (Tylenol on) will kill cats and percenaannya in an emergency. Also, products that contain phenol as lysol can not be used around cats because of metabolizing these products. Some cats like antifreeze (antifreeze). Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol and if digested akan cause kidney failure if not treated immediately. The answer is no doubt that the products around a cat until you have the authority mengeceknya. Also cats often eat plants, some can be toxic for cats. So better to give them sprouteed feed for cemilan Oats at the time they want to weed again.

Cats love the lace-like

Therefore, it is important to keep at this cat’s environment, or try to reduce them to kedayatarikan cable-the cable. Cleaning routine to promote good hygiene behavior. Cat owners should also provide boundaries for their cat. If they are not allowed in certain rooms menajamkan or nails in their seats or furniture, this must be fostered dilatihi since the first time a cat is kept. It is easier to prevent problems rather than changing behavior that has become a habit

Show Your Love for Your Cat by Feeding Him/her Nutritional Cat Foods and Avoiding Bad Cat Foods

When you visit a supermarket to purchase food for your family and you see a newproduct that you think might be a healthy choice, your first decision is to read the label to identify the ingredients and decide if the ingredients are healthy for your family.

Don’t you think it would be prudent to read cat food labels and determine whether it’s a bad cat food or a nutritional cat food? A cat food with any of their first five ingredients listed as a carbohydrate is bad cat food and it is harming your cat.

However, most cat owners fail to read cat food labels and as a result, you feed your cats many bad cat foods with harmful ingredients that are causing premature cat deaths.

Since most cat caregivers consider their feline friends as family members, don’t you think you should show them the same consideration? Feeding your cat bad cat food that leads to premature cat deaths is not showing love for your cat.

Cats are carnivores and their physiology demands a meat-based diet as this will closely mimic their natural diet. It’s imperative that you remember and abide by guidelines that will benefit your cat and help him/her realize their longevity. Bad cat foods will not do this but nutritional cat foods will.

Such foods as carbohydrates will damage your cats’ digestive system and cause food related diseases that will severely shorten his life. These are not nutritional cat foods but rather bad cat foods and they are the main cause of premature cat deaths

For your educational benefit as well as your cats’ lives, let’s take a look at some cat foods and examine their ingredients.

Use of Carbohydrates which include;

Oat Bran and Rice Flour also included is

Avocado oil and Guar gum

Oat bran is the outer husk of the oat grain – it is a carbohydrate.

Rice flour is a form of flour made from finely milled rice – another carbohydrate.

Avocado oil is oil pressed from the fruit of avocados. The fruit, leaves, bark and seeds of avocados have been reported as being toxic to cats. The toxic component in avocado is “Persin” which is a fatty acid preservative. Oat bran, rice flour, avocado oil and guar gum are all bad cat food ingredients

Use of Carbohydrates which include;

Brewers Rice and Corn Grits also

includes Beef-by-Product, Dried Egg

Product, Dried Beet Pulp and Menadione

Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite

Brewers rice and corn grits are starchy carbohydrates with no nutritional benefit to cats

Beef by-product is the parts of the cow other than muscle meat. It could be organs and skin. Its origin is Rendering Plants.

Dried Beet Pulp is free from crowns and leaves extracted from the process of manufacturing sugar. It’s mostly used as a filler in cat food.

Dried Egg Product – Cheap source of protein – waste product of the egg industry. It could include undeveloped eggs, shells and other tissue deemed unfit for humans. Brewers rice, corn grits, beef by-products, dried egg products, dried beet pulp and MDB are all bad cat food ingredients.

Use of a Carbohydrate; Wheat Gluten

also includes Meat by-Product and

Menadione Sodium Bisulfite

Wheat Gluten – The tough, viscid nitrogenous substance remaining when wheat is washed to remove the starch. Wheat gluten is a cheap by-product of human food processing, the starchy liquid left after washing wheat. It is used mostly to bind food together. Wheat gluten is included in a number of human food products, as well as pet foods. Contaminated wheat gluten from China has been found responsible for a large number of the reported sicknesses and death of pets from melamine toxicity.

Meat by-product – Is the product that’s derived from Rendering Plants; road-kill, and the four Ds (dead, dying, diseased, disabled) and decaying animals flesh.

I’ve already explained what menadione derivatives are.

Wheat gluten, meat by-products and MSB are all bad cat food ingredients.

Use of Meat by-Products, Poultry

Giblets, Poultry and Bone Meal,

Vegetable Gums and Onion Salt,

I’ve already defined meat by-products earlier and we all know what poultry giblets are, correct? In case you don’t know, it’s the gizzards and hearts of chickens and turkeys provided that’s their origin but we don’t really know, they could come from buzzards as their source is not identified.

Bone Meal is another unidentified ingredient. It could come from the five Ds (dead, dying, diseased, disabled and decaying) animals that are products of Rendering Plants.

Vegetable Gum is another carbohydrate and its main purpose is a thickener or binder and it serves no nutritional purpose for cats and it could be toxic.

Onion Salt – No form of garlic or onion should be used in cat foods. Onions contain Thiosulphate which is toxic to cats.

Meat by-products, poultry giblets, poultry and bone meal, vegetable gums and onion salt are all bad cat food ingredients.

The above cat foods and their ingredients are a mere sample of what’s available as cat foods. Now that you have some information to improve you cats’ diet, use it and your cat will appreciate you taking their health into consideration.

Stop feeding your cat bad cat foods that are harming them. Stop buying bad food for your cats and lining the pockets of commercial cat food companies because they are laughing at how uninformed cat owners really are by actually purchasing the stuff they call food and feeding it to your pets.

It’s unbelievable that caring pet owners could actually create a market for bad cat food. If we don’t stop buying bad cat foods and start feeding our cats nutritional cat foods, our cats’ mortally rate will continue to skyrocket.

Since uninformed cat caregivers are the ones that created the market for bad cat food, what do you think would happen to the commercial cat food companies if suddenly cat caregivers became informed and stopped buying their bad cat foods?

They would stop making bad cat foods and begin making nutritional cat foods or go out of business.

Most cat caregivers are not that responsible. They have refused to stop buying bad cat foods and each year the commercial cat food company’s profits continue to increase. At this rate, the pet food industry will never act responsible enough to produce nutritional cat foods.

Because of convenience, cat caregivers buy bad cat foods that are loaded with toxins. A bag of dry cat food is killing your cat but do you care? Do you prefer your convenience over providing your cat with nutritional cat food?

The commercial cat food industry is banking on their research and it suggests that cat caregivers are uninformed relative to nutritional cat foods and they are more concerned with their convenience. Therefore, there is no incentive for the commercial cat food industry to produce nutritional cat foods so they will continue producing cheap and bad cat foods and you will continue buying it and they will continue laughing all the way to the banks and your cats will continue dying prematurely

How to Train Your Cat to Use the Litter box

Training a cat to use the litter pan is probably the easiest time you’ll ever have teaching your cat to do anything. Cats are instinctively clean animals and will practically teach themselves to go in a litter pan assuming they know that one is available.

The first step to any successful litter-training program is to choose a litter pan that is both functional and pleasing to both you and your cat. Let’s face it, if the cat finds the litter pan distasteful, he will not use it. Litter pans come in three basic models: covered, uncovered and automatic. The covered units will come in two pieces, the main pan and a plastic shell that covers it. The uncovered model will have a similar base but lacks the hard plastic shell that covers it. An automatic litter pan will consist of a base and a motion sensor rake that will scoop the urine or feces out of the pan after the cat exits the area. The pan you choose will depend on your budget and your cat’s preferences. Some cats will refuse to enter a covered pan and many do not like the noise automatic pans make, so be prepared to purchase more than one pan just in case.

The type of litter you choose will also be determined by what your cat prefers. There are several different litter media you can choose from: clay, clumping, and shavings. Clay litter is inexpensive and practical, though will require that your pan gets regular cleanings as the urine will sink straight to the bottom. Clumping litter allows you to scoop both feces and urine, keeping the pan cleaner longer. Some owners prefer a biodegradable litter such as pine shavings or cedar, which absorbs urine, smells fresh and will completely decompose in the environment.

It is best to work with a younger cat when starting litter training. Younger cats have had less time to develop bad habits or specific aversions to litter.    After feeding your kitten, when he wakes from a nap, or after a few minutes of hard play, place him in the vicinity of the litter pan and encourage him to check it out. You may need to place the kitten in the pan in order to get him in the mood. Most kittens will quickly take advantage of the litter pan as it caters to their natural elimination behaviors by allowing him or her to cover the urine or feces afterward. Lavish plenty of praise on the kitten after he has finished.

In the early stages of training, it is best to keep the kitten in close proximity to the litter pan so that he has the opportunity to use it on his own. Most will use it as a matter of choice rather than to relieve himself on the floor.

Older cats may present a slightly tougher customer when it comes to litter pan use. Older cats have either already developed idiosyncrasies regarding litter pan use or have developed undesirable elimination behaviors. The first step is to purchase several different types of pans and litters. Most often, litter pan aversion is caused by a particular dislike of a specific pan or litter type. Next, keep the cat confined to a small room with a slick surface floor. This will encourage him to use the pan instead of the floor. Some cats have a particular distaste for using a dirty pan, so make sure the pan is cleaned after each use.

If the cat you are attempting to train is an intact male, the behavior you are witnessing is not associated with litter pan aversion, but with territorial marking. Have the male neutered and you may see a decrease in territorial urinating. Females can also do this in an attempt to assert dominance in a multi-cat household. Ensuring that all the cats in a household are spayed or neutered will help reduce these behaviors. If all else fails, mature cats can be placed on Valium to help with elimination problems.

How To Train A Cat

Cats are independent and willful, so it is impossible to train them, right? Well, actually, in most cases, it is perfectly possible to train a cat. The “in most cases” proviso is because cats vary dramatically in temperament and character. Subsequently, there are some cats that are more difficult to train than others.

However, despite not having a dog’s desire to please, even the most stubborn and independent cats can be taught basic behaviors, such as using the litter box. Of course, cats that are more interested in their human owners can be taught more advanced behaviors and tricks. The following training tips can be used with any cat or kitten.

1. Some cat owners find clicker training to be a very successful technique. You may like to consider a clicker or other form of cuing device when training. Simply, sound the clicker once or twice when you give the cat a treat. Soon, the cat will associate the sound and the treat and then the treat can be substituted for the click alone. It is wise to phase out food treats, because otherwise you will have a very well behaved, but very overweight kitty.

2. Regardless of the reward method you choose, it is a good idea to offer the reward immediately after a cat has done what you have asked. For example, when litter box training, ensure that you provide praise, the clicker or a treat as soon as your cat has used the litter box.

3. No matter what you are trying to train your cat to do, it is crucial to use positive reinforcement in order that the cat associates the action that you want with something pleasant. The use of catnip, or something that your cat particularly enjoys, is recommended, especially if you are having difficulty training your cat.

4. It is advisable to keep your training session quite short. 10-15 minutes is the longest that they should be, but if your cat becomes restless after five minutes, then you should cease and begin again some other time. If your cat is disinterested, you will not have any success. So try to keep training sessions interesting and, most importantly, as brief as possible.

5. Likewise, cats are not likely to respond well to training in a noisy or busy atmosphere. Therefore, it is wise to attempt training when the house is as quiet as possible and there are only a few people (whom the cat feels comfortable around) in the room. For some cats, however, the only technique that will work is one-on-one training.

6. A mistake that can easily be made is to alter the training methods or techniques. Consistency is all-important when attempting to train a cat. So, for example, if you have begun using a clicker then it is advisable to stick with this method. Additionally, always be sure to use exactly the same commands and try to use the same tone of voice each and every time you try to teach your cat a behavior or trick.

7. Perhaps the most important piece of advice that can be offered is this: do not punish your cat. Punishment is not an advisable method of training any animal, but it will prove particularly counterproductive with a cat. If your training style is having no effect, then try using another method, but never chide your cat. Of course, if it is a destructive or dangerous behavior that you are trying to modify, then you may find it helpful to administer a quick squirt of water from a plant sprayer. However, this should not be used to coerce a cat into doing a specific activity.

Bear in mind, all cats are different and so will not respond to training in the same way. However, these tips will provide a great basis for your cat and kitten training.
